K25M's are fine for supporting a boutique and as an input device to support patch auditioning, but that's it. At full volume using the built-in speaker it's hard to hear unless the room you're in is very quiet.While the K25M doesn't do after touch, it does do velocity.The D05 patches tend to make a lot of use of both, so you can either edit those or beat the keyboard to death to get some volume.There is a 3rd way, which is to fine tune the velocity sensitivity of your master keyboard. Compared to the other boutiques, the D-05 popped into a K25m is extremely quiet. Not with the single hit and loop pcm sound sources.If you're using the K-25, there is no aftertouch and so patches just come across as ridiculously quiet.Yeah I agree with this.

The keyboard action is very good, and it has enough rotary controllers, faders and buttons to map the main parameters from any sound modules I have onto it - JP-08, JU-06, D-05, DSI Tetra and Micromonsta.I've long wanted a D-50 or successor, and have had my eye on the rack-mount V-Synth XT. I do like the discipline of the K25M, but it's ultimately inadequate for both the SE02 and D05.I use a Roland A500 pro (49 notes). Decent controller keyboards are an investment, and help get the best out of any sound module.Agreed, and there are quite a few great choices out there.

This leaves me with the rather daft choice of programming while the sequencer runs or playing from a keyboard, but not both (unless I buy a MIDI Merge device).It does strike me as exceedingly weird that Roland copied the biggest flaws in the original instrument rather than address them. I downloaded the iPG800 app, which does help somewhat, however I can't get it to talk to the D-05 through the USB port, only the DIN MIDI sockets. The old analogy of 'painting your front hallway through the mail slot' seems apt.

The interface of the D50 has been reproduced exactly, and of all the boutiques the interface loses very little from being miniaturised - probably because the original was not that great anyway. For instance, the chorus on the JU-06 defaults to being unfeasibly noisy, although the noise can be switched off. Once you've done that, programming via iPad and listening to your work is relatively trivial.Roland's brief (I think) was to remain as true to the original D50 instrument as possible - same for all the boutiques.
